The Daily Chart: College Cheating Epidemic (11/22/2024)

(Steven Hayward) The Chronicle of Higher Education reports this week that cheating at college has become rampant: Some institutions, including Middlebury College, in Vermont, and Stanford University, are reconsidering elements of their honor codes because they’re simply not working. At Middlebury, the percentage of students who admitted on an annual survey to violating the honor code rose from 35 percent in 2019 to 65 percent in 2024. The most common self-reported violations were using unauthorized aids, such as SparkNotes or a friend, cheating on a test, and misusing AI. Here’s

Lost in the rainforest (11/22/2024)

(Scott Johnson) In a brutal allusion to the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale, Matt Taibbi declares in a paywalled Racket News post that “The emperor has no brains.” He’s referring to Joe Biden. Less tartly, Byron York observes in his Examiner column “With raging wars and an addled president, it’s a perilous moment.” They both cite Biden’s public statement in the Amazon (White House transcript here, video below). He gained just four votes from the first wave of recounts, which were completed on Wednesday. By Thursday afternoon, McCormick had gained seven votes, according to

A Conversation with Our Next Energy Secretary (11/22/2024)

(Steven Hayward) John and I already noted last weekend Trump’s spectacular pick to be secretary of energy (“The Wright Stuff at Energy“), Chris Wright of Liberty Energy, and I mentioned that you could take in an old podcast I did with Chris and Matt Ridley some years back. I had forgotten that I also did a video interview with him via Zoom for our pals at the Pacific Research Institute back around 2021, and here it is for interested readers: I’m still on the road overseas for another two weeks,

Thoughts from the ammo line (11/22/2024)

(Scott Johnson) Ammo Grrrll revives an old question: HOW DO YOU SPELL RELIEF?! She writes: Many years ago, a popular indigestion product featured a television commercial in which the voiceover asked: “How do you spell ‘relief’?” And then, in big bold letters across the screen, plus more voiceover, it answered the question thusly, R-O-L-A-I-D-S. Fair enough. That commercial was played over and over and over again for several years — to the point that I read an article which claimed that grade school children, when asked how to spell “relief”
